What’s the Problem?

This recall affects about 38,900 Kichler 52-inch LED indoor ceiling fans in the U.S., in addition to about 3,100 units sold in Canada, according to a Recall Notice by the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) [1] .

The recalled ceiling fans have 5 blades, bronze accents, etched umber glass, and an integrated LED module. Model number 35153 is printed on the top of the fan’s motor housing, CPSC said.

If you purchased a ceiling fan that is affected by this recall, you should stop using it immediately and contact Kichler for instructions on how to obtain a free replacement fan. This recall began on March 12, 2020.

Ceiling Fan Hazards

One of the biggest problems with ceiling fans is that they can break free from the ceiling if they’re not installed correctly.

Ceiling fans should be supported by an electrical junction box that was intended specifically for this purpose. A fan brace box should also be used to keep it in place.

Avoid the temptation to simply install a ceiling fan where a lighting fixture once hung without upgrading the electrical junction box. It can lead to the fan falling or the fan blades to detach.

FAQs

What are the potential long-term effects of using a defective Kichler Fan?

The potential long-term effects of using a defective Kichler Fan can include ongoing safety risks, such as the possibility of electrical fires, injuries from falling fan blades, or motor failures that could cause the fan to stop functioning altogether. These risks may lead to costly repairs, replacement expenses, and the need for continued vigilance to ensure the fan is safe to use.

How can homeowners identify potential defects in their Kichler Fans?

Homeowners can identify potential defects in their Kichler Fans by regularly inspecting the fan for signs of wear, unusual noises, wobbling, or any other indications that the fan may not be functioning correctly. It’s also important to check for any burning smells, sparks, or flickering lights, which could signal an electrical problem. If any issues are detected, it’s advisable to stop using the fan and have it inspected by a professional.

What should consumers do if they experience property damage due to a defective Kichler Fan?

If consumers experience property damage due to a defective Kichler Fan, they should document the damage thoroughly with photos and written descriptions, report the incident to Kichler and the CPSC, and consult with their insurance company to file a claim. It may also be beneficial to consult with a legal professional to explore options for recovering additional damages through a lawsuit.

Can Kichler Fans be repaired if they are found to be defective, or should they be replaced?

Whether a Kichler Fan can be repaired or should be replaced depends on the severity of the defect. Minor issues such as loose wiring or balancing problems may be repairable by a professional electrician. However, more serious defects, particularly those related to structural integrity or major electrical components, may require a full replacement to ensure the fan is safe to use.
