What's the Problem?

This recall affects Vantage-modified Dodge Grand Caravan vehicles from model years 2016-2019, according to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The fuel pump gasket on affected Dodge Caravans may deteriorate, allowing fuel to leak, NHTSA said. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.

Vantage is notifying owners and will provide parts and reimbursement for repair facilities to replace the fuel tank gasket.

This recall began on May 19, 2020.

Dodge Caravan Class Action Lawsuit

A class action lawsuit filed in July 2021 alleges that certain Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country minivans were built with a defective door latch system that caused the vehicles’ sliding doors to either fail to lock or get stuck in the locked position.

The locking problems are caused by a defective actuator which prevents the doors from operating properly and often results in drivers having to pay out of pocket to repair the door latch assemblies, the complaint states.

In addition to causing “aggravating circumstances” and financial burden, the allegedly defective door latches present a significant safety risk, the lawsuit stresses, noting that children especially are at particular risk if the doors open while the car is in motion. In other situations, the doors could remain locked when passengers are trying to exit the vehicle, which could increase the risk of injury during an accident.

The class action further alleges that the door latch defect occurs whether the vehicle is on or off, and can subject it to potential crime, including theft, or drain the car’s battery, leaving the occupants stranded.

Finally, the lawsuit claims that FCA US LLC has been aware of the problems with the Grand Caravan and Town & Country’s door locks, yet has failed to properly warn buyers, recall the vehicles, or pay for repairs.
