Times of San Diego reported that a San Diego man sued Amazon, Colsen and Gusar in San Diego Superior Court over third-degree burns from a Colsen fire pit [2]. Flame jetting contributed to the June 2024 death of an elderly couple, and the manufacturer is no longer in business [8].October 17, 2024: CPSC Announces Colsen Fire Pit Recall
CPSC announced recall number 25-015 of about 89,500 Colsen-branded fire pits after 31 reports of flame jetting and 19 burn injuries [9]. The notice says the firm lacks the financial resources to offer a remedy. CPSC says two incidents caused third-degree burns to more than 40% of the victim’s body. The San Diego complaint reported on August 6, 2026 also concerns a Colsen fire pit.Who May Be Affected?
Owners and users of a tabletop fire pit that requires pouring alcohol or other liquid fuel into an open container and igniting it in place fit the circumstances CPSC describes in its consumer alert. CPSC says these products are also sold as tabletop fire pits, fire pots, miniature fireplaces or portable fires for indoor use. Check which fuel your own unit uses. Anyone burned while refilling one with a flame present, even one too small to see, also fits. CPSC says the flame can ignite fuel vapor and propel flames and burning liquid onto the person pouring or bystanders. Whether you have a claim depends on the product, the fuel and how the burn happened, so it needs an individual legal review by a lawyer.Think you may qualify?

Reported Injuries or Damages
A San Diego man bought a Colsen tabletop fire pit in 2021. His complaint alleges that in 2025 it exploded on his balcony and hit him in the face and body with a jet of flame. The complaint alleges third-degree burns and scarring. It seeks money for lost earnings, medical expenses and other losses. These are allegations over another brand and are not court findings. Since 2019, CPSC’s consumer alert says, liquid-burning fire pits have been associated with two deaths and at least 60 injuries. CPSC reports are not proof that any one incident was caused by a given product. The same alert says isopropyl alcohol, ethanol, bioethanol and similar liquid fuels burn at flame temperatures over 1,600°F. They can cause third degree burns in less than one second.Recall and Regulatory Background
CPSC’s December 19, 2024 consumer alert covers liquid-burning fire pits as a category. Recalls name Colsen, Five Below and Brookstone. Warnings name FLIKRFIRE, Rozato, Northlight and Houswise. None of these notices names Pure Garden. The Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation lists no MDL for tabletop or liquid-fuel fire pits in its Pending MDL Dockets report dated September 1, 2026 [10]. A recall of another brand does not prove liability against any other maker. The tabletop fire pit recalls page has more detail.Evidence to Preserve
These items may help a lawyer review what happened, so keep them together and photograph the fire pit before any disposal:- Photographs of the fire pit, its label and its packaging
- The model name and any numbers printed on the box or the bottom of the unit
- The receipt, order confirmation or listing showing where and when it was bought
- The fuel container and the fuel brand
- Photographs of the injury, the scene and any damage
- Notes on when, where and how the burn happened, written down soon after
- Medical records and bills
- Names of witnesses
- Messages with the seller or maker
Filing Deadlines
Filing deadlines come from state law, and they vary with where you live and when the burn happened. A missed deadline can end an otherwise strong claim. Ask a lawyer promptly about the time limit that applies to your situation, because only a lawyer can say which rule governs.Frequently Asked Questions
Is There a Pure Garden Fire Pit Recall?
There is no Pure Garden fire pit recall on record. The newest CPSC fire pit recall covers Brookstone-branded fire pits from Southern Telecom Inc. of Brooklyn, New York, and its remedy is a refund. The Colsen and Five Below recalls name other brands too.Can I File a Pure Garden Fire Pit Lawsuit?
Whether you can file a Pure Garden fire pit lawsuit depends on your facts and a lawyer’s review. Federal court records show no case naming Pure Garden. State-court dockets are separate, so a state filing would not appear in those records.Who Could Be Held Liable for a Fire Pit Burn Injury?
Who could be held liable for a fire pit burn injury is for a court to decide. In the San Diego case, the plaintiff’s attorneys describe Colsen and Gusar as manufacturers and say they are also pursuing Amazon. That is only an allegation. What Is Flame Jetting and Why Is It Dangerous?
Flame jetting is dangerous because flames erupt from the container of liquid fuel, and the person refilling it can be burned. A pool fire is a separate hazard: pooled fuel suddenly produces larger, hotter flames that spread beyond the container.Should I Stop Using My Pure Garden Fire Pit?
You should stop using your Pure Garden fire pit if it burns alcohol or other liquid fuel, because that is the type CPSC’s alert tells consumers to stop using. To report a dangerous product or injury, use SaferProducts.gov or call the CPSC hotline at 800-638-2772.What Does the Research Say About Liquid-Fuel Tabletop Fire Pits?
CPSC’s consumer alert says liquid-fuel tabletop fire pits that need fuel poured into an open bowl and ignited where poured violate ASTM F3363-19. That voluntary standard is designed to prevent pool fires and flame jetting.References
