What’s the Problem?
This recall was initiated because infant fatalities have been reported with similar inclined sleep products, after babies rolled from their backs to their stomachs or sides, according to the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) [1].
The recall affects inclined sleeper accessories sold with the following products:
- Kolcraft Cuddle ‘n Care 2-in-1 Bassinet & Incline Sleeper (model number starting with KB063)
- Kolcraft Preferred Position 2-in-1 Bassinet & Incline Sleeper (model number starting with KB061)
Model numbers are located on the metal bar between the bassinets’ legs, CPSC said. The recalled Kolcraft Bassinet accessories were sold at juvenile product stores and mass merchandisers nationwide from March 2011 through December 2017 for about $140, CPSC said.
If you purchased a Cuddle ‘n Care Bassinet that is affected by this recall, you should stop using it immediately and contact Kolcraft for a $35 voucher to be used on the company’s website or a $20 refund. Consumers may continue to use the Kolcraft Bassinet without the inclined sleeper accessory, CPSC said.
Kolcraft is contacting registered owners and known purchasers via mail. This recall began on Feb. 20, 2020.
CPSC Approves Ban on Inclined Sleepers
On August 7, 2023, the CPSC voted to issue 2 final rules to codify the bans on inclined sleepers that Congress established in the Safe Sleep for Babies Act (SSBA). The act prohibits not only the sale of inclined sleepers, but also the manufacture for sale, distribution, or importation of these products into the U.S. The rules implement the statute which went into effect on November 12, 2022.
The final rule for infant sleepers defines “inclined sleeper for infants” as a product with an inclined sleep surface of more than 10 degrees which is intended to provide sleeping accommodations for a baby up to 1 year old.
These rules aim to save children’s lives and create a safer marketplace for parents.
