Three Million Kids Boppy Newborn Loungers Recalled After Eight Infants Died
The Boppy Company is recalling 3.3 million Boppy Original Newborn Loungers, Boppy Preferred Newborn Loungers and Pottery Barn Kids Newborn Lounger after the company received at least 8 reports of infant deaths associated with the infant sleep product.
The babies suffocated during unsafe sleep practices after being placed on their back, side or stomach in the Boppy Newborn loungers and Pottery Barn Loungers, and were found on their side or on their stomachs, the Boppy Company said.
The reports of infant deaths occurred between December 2015 and June 2020.
“These types of incidents are heartbreaking,” said U.S. Consumer Product Safety (CPSC) Acting Chairman Robert S. Adler. “Recalled loungers and Boppy pillow-like infant sleep products are not safe for infant sleep, due to the risk of suffocation. Since we know that infants sleep so much of the time – even in products not intended for sleep – and since the infant deaths associated can happen so quickly, these Boppy lounger products are simply too risky to remain on the market.”
This recall involves all Boppy Newborn Loungers and padded crib bumpers.
Boppy sold the baby loungers in a variety of colors and fashions and measured about 23 inches long by 22 inches wide and 7 inches high.
Affected Boppy Loungers and Pottery Barn Kids Loungers were sold at juvenile product stores and mass merchandisers nationwide and online, including Pottery Barn Kids, Target, and Walmart, and online at Amazon.com.
The loungers were sold from January 2004 through September 2021 for between $30 and $44.
If you purchased a Boppy Company Newborn Lounger or a Pottery Barn Kids Lounger that is affected by this recall, you should stop using it immediately and contact The Boppy Company for a full refund.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Boppy Loungers Recall [1] began on September 23, 2021.
Recalled Models to Look For
The recall includes specific Boppy pillow models designed for newborns:
- Original Newborn Lounger
- Preferred Newborn Lounger
- Pottery Barn Kids Lounger
If you own one of these products, it’s essential to verify additional details to confirm if it’s part of the recall.
Date and Price Range of Affected Products
These recalled products were sold over a significant timeframe:
- Sale Dates: January 2004 to September 2021
- Price Range: $30 to $44
If you purchased a lounger within this date and price range, check further details to confirm.
Key Features for Quick Identification
You can identify a recalled Boppy pillow by the following characteristics:
- Measurements: 23 inches long, 22 inches wide, and 7 inches high.
- Model Numbers: Look for model numbers 415114 and 415117, often used for head and neck support designs.
- Retailers: Sold at popular outlets including:
- Amazon
- Target
- Walmart
- Pottery Barn Kids
If your Boppy pillow matches these descriptions, it’s likely part of the recall. Take immediate steps to discontinue use and contact the manufacturer for further instructions. Your safety and that of your child is the top priority.
Boppy Infant Head & Neck Support Accessory Recalled Due to Suffocation Risk
As claimed by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, in July 2019, the Boppy Company recalled about 14,000 Boppy Infant Head and Neck Support Accessories [2] after the company received at least 3 reports of the infant’s head being pushed forward chin to the chest by the product.
According to the recall notice, the adult pillow support area of the Boppy Preferred Newborn Lounger System can be overstuffed, causing the child’s head to be tilted too far forward, posing a suffocation hazard.
The recall involves Original Newborn Loungers Boppy Head and Neck supports sold in Ebony Floral and Heathered Gray colors, with model numbers 4150114 and 4150117.
The model number can be found on the fabric label on the head support. The device can also be used as an accessory in swings, bouncers, and strollers, CPSC said.
The recalled Boppy Loungers were sold online at Amazon.com, Target, Buy Buy Baby, and other major children’s retailers and furniture stores.
If you purchased a head and neck supporter that is affected by the recall, you should contact Boppy Products for information about how to obtain a refund.
CPSC Bans Inclined Sleepers With New Safety Standards
As stated by CPSC, in June 2021, the agency announced a major new federal safety standard to safeguard babies that will effectively ban inclined sleepers that are not on a flat surface from the marketplace [3], including all types of inclined bassinets, rockers, gliders, and swings.
According to Consumer Reports, the new standards will ban many inclined sleepers that were not voluntarily recalled. Here are a few examples [4]:
- Evenflo Pillo Portable Napper
- Hiccapop DayDreamer
- Baby Delight Go With Me – Sway Portable Infant Rocker
- Baby Delight Nestle Nook Comfort – Plush Infant Napper
- SwaddleMe By Your Bed Sleeper (made by Sumr Brands)
- Chicco Lullaby Dream Playard’s inclined napper insert

How Did Pediatricians Respond to the Boppy Company Recalls?
Pediatricians have long been critics of inclined sleepers, warning parents and the public about the suffocation risks of the product.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and Boppy Company issued a strongly worded rebuke to the initial April 2019 CPSC alert, cautioning that it did not go far enough and urging the agency to begin an immediate recall of the product based on the Consumer Reports study and the AAP’s advice on sleep positioning to add blankets.

What Damages Can Be Compensated in a Boppy Recall Lawsuit?
In product liability cases like this one, damages fall into two key categories:
- Special (Actual) Damages: These are tangible, measurable costs related to the harm caused by the product. Examples include medical expenses, lost wages, or property damage. These damages aim to compensate for direct financial losses you have incurred due to the injury.
- General Damages: These cover intangible losses such as pain and suffering, emotional distress, and loss of enjoyment of life. While harder to quantify, they address the broader impact the injury has had on your quality of life and relationships.
Knowing the types of damages you can claim is the first step in understanding your potential compensation.
When Can You File? Understanding Statute of Limitations
Each state sets its own timeline for filing product liability lawsuits, known as the statute of limitations. These typically range from 2 to 4 years from the date of injury or when the harm was discovered.
Acting promptly is critical, as missing this window can bar you from pursuing legal action. Consult with a legal professional in your state to determine the exact timeframe and avoid losing your right to file.
What Documentation Do You Need to File a Claim?
Having proper documentation is vital to support your case. Essential items include:
- Proof of Purchase: Receipt or documentation showing you owned the Boppy Baby Pillow.
- Medical Records: Reports detailing the injuries or health issues linked to the product.
- Expense Receipts: Bills for medical care, rehabilitation, or related costs like transportation to appointments.
- Income Evidence: Pay stubs or other documentation showing lost wages or reduced earning capacity.
- Expert Testimony: Statements or reports from professionals connecting the injury to the defective product.
With comprehensive evidence, your case is stronger and more likely to result in fair compensation.
The Boppy Baby Pillow Recall lawsuit offers a path for affected individuals to seek justice and compensation. Understanding the types of damages, filing timelines, and required evidence can help you navigate the legal process and hold manufacturers accountable.
