The My First Snowman toy from The Step2 Company was recalled because its battery-powered top hat can break into small pieces. Small children could choke on those pieces.
The CPSC announced the recall on May 29, 2025, together with Health Canada, and the recall is open. It covers toys with date codes 12/2023 and 04/2024, about 30,800 units in the United States and 692 in Canada.

May 29, 2025: CPSC and Health Canada Announce the Recall
On May 29, 2025, the CPSC announced the recall of about 30,800 My First Snowman toys sold in the United States [1]. Health Canada joined the recall, which also covers 692 toys sold in Canada [2].
The top hat can break into small pieces, a choking hazard. The Step2 Company is notifying known purchasers and offering a free replacement hat.
Which My First Snowman Products Are Affected?
Only snowman toys made in December 2023 and April 2024 are part of this recall. The recalled toys have these details:
- Product: My First Snowman toy with a battery-powered top hat, about 17 inches high
- Date codes: 12/2023 and 04/2024
- Sold at: Step2.com, Amazon.com, Walmart.com and Wayfair.com
- Sale period: March 2024 through December 2024
- Price: about $40
The date code appears on the bottom of the hat near the battery compartment. Check it before you decide whether your toy is part of the recall.
Why Was the My First Snowman Recalled?
The My First Snowman was recalled because the top hat can break into small pieces. That poses a risk of serious injury or death to small children from choking.
According to Health Canada’s notice, the brim of the hat can break and create a small part. The Canadian recall covers the removable top hat sold with the toy, sold online at Walmart Canada.
An Australian recall for the same toy was also issued. It covers toys sold from March 1, 2024 to December 16, 2024, through Step2 Direct Australia [3].
Reported Incidents, Injuries, or Illnesses
The firm has received 47 reports of the brim of the top hat breaking. The CPSC says no injuries have been reported.
Health Canada’s notice gives a lower count. It reports 44 US reports of the brim breaking as of May 28, 2025, and no injuries. It also reports no incidents or injuries in Canada as of that date.
A report that a brim broke does not mean a child was hurt. Reports are not proof that the toy caused any injury.
What Should Consumers Do?
Follow these steps if your child has a My First Snowman toy:
- Stop using the snowman immediately, take off the hat and keep it away from children.
- Check the date code. Codes 12/2023 and 04/2024 are recalled.
- Take a photo of the date code on the bottom of the brim before you dispose of the hat, as Health Canada advises.
- Call Step2 toll-free at 800-347-8372, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or email step2-company@step2.net. You can also use step2.com/pages/step2-my-first-snowman.
- Ask Step2 how to dispose of the hat and receive a free replacement.
