Update: Underhood Fires in 2021-2023 Jeep Gladiator Vehicles
The Jeep Gladiator has recently come under scrutiny due to reports of underhood fires in models from 2021 to 2023. These incidents have prompted investigations by the NHTSA and raised concerns among owners and potential buyers [1.].
Reports of Underhood Fires
In September 2024, the NHTSA initiated an investigation into approximately 781,459 Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator vehicles from the 2021 to 2023 model years [2.].
The agency received nine complaints of engine compartment fires, with most incidents occurring while the vehicles were turned off. Notably, one report included an injury related to the fire.
Owners reported that the fires originated on the passenger side of the engine compartment, leading to significant vehicle damage and potential safety hazards.
Potential Causes Identified
Preliminary findings suggest that the fires may be linked to the power steering pump’s electrical connector. Stellantis, the parent company of Jeep, acknowledged several “thermal events” originating at this connector in recent Wrangler and Gladiator models. The connector is located on the passenger front side of the engine compartment, aligning with the reported fire locations.
NHTSA’s Investigation and Response
The NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) is conducting a preliminary evaluation to determine the cause, scope, and frequency of these incidents. The investigation aims to assess the potential consequences and decide whether a recall is necessary. As of now, no official recall has been issued, but the investigation remains active.
Stellantis’ Position and Cooperation
Stellantis has expressed its commitment to cooperating with the NHTSA’s investigation. The company is working closely with regulatory authorities to identify the root cause of the fires and implement appropriate measures to ensure customer safety. Stellantis has not issued a public statement detailing specific actions but has acknowledged awareness of the reported incidents.
Safety Recommendations for Jeep Gladiator Owners
While the investigation is ongoing, Jeep Gladiator owners are advised to take precautionary measures:
- Monitor for Unusual Signs: Be vigilant for any signs of smoke, burning odors, or unusual noises from the engine compartment.
- Regular Maintenance: Ensure that the vehicle undergoes regular maintenance checks, focusing on the electrical systems and connectors.
- Parking Precautions: Given the reports of fires occurring with the ignition off, consider parking the vehicle away from structures or other vehicles until more information is available.
- Stay Informed: Keep abreast of updates from the NHTSA and Stellantis regarding the investigation and any potential recalls or safety notices.
The reports of underhood fires in 2021-2023 Jeep Gladiator vehicles have raised significant safety concerns among owners and the broader automotive community.
The ongoing NHTSA investigation seeks to uncover the root cause and determine necessary corrective actions.
In the meantime, owners are encouraged to remain vigilant and adhere to safety recommendations to mitigate potential risks.

What’s the Problem?
According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), this recall affects the following Jeeps equipped with manual transmissions:
- 2020-2021 Jeep Gladiator
- 2018-2021 Jeep Wrangler
The clutch pressure plate on the above vehicles may overheat and fracture, increasing the risk of a fire. Additionally, damage to other nearby components may cause debris to fall onto the road or a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.
Chrysler is notifying owners and dealers will add software to reduce engine torque capability when clutch assembly temperatures rise to a level that may damage the inner pressure plate, free of charge.
This recall began on March 4, 2021.
Jeep Agrees to Settlement Over Gladiator “Death Wobble”
In January 2023, it was announced that a class-action lawsuit against FCA US is moving forward and owners of certain Jeep Gladiator and Wrangler vehicles suffering from “death wobble” may be getting an extended warranty and cash back for certain repairs paid out of pocket.
Death wobble is an issue that can affect vehicles with live-axle-type front suspensions, because of the need for several linkages to steer. Ball joints are needed to articulate the linkages, and a steering damper is needed to attenuate any unwanted vibration.
However, the multitude of linkages can lead to a harmonic vibration to form that self-amplifies. A steering damper normally fixes this, but steering components in a live axle vehicle wear more quickly than a rack-and-pinion.
As part of the settlement, FCA US will admit no wrongdoing and also pay up to $3.95 million for attorney fees and $4,000 for each class representative, including an extension to an 8-year, 90,000-mile warranty. The extended warranty would cover parts and labor needed to replace a front suspension damper.
