American Honda Motor Co. asked the court to dismiss the class-action lawsuit over the Honda Odyssey‘s airbag recall. Honda argued that its government-supervised recall means the owners suffered no injury.
Law360 reported that Honda’s motion argues the recall already addresses the alleged defect [1]. The case had not been decided when Honda filed the motion.
July 1, 2026: Honda Files a Second Recall for a Rearview-Camera Fault
Honda notified NHTSA of a new recall covering 325,588 Odysseys built for the 2018, 2019 and 2020 model years. Water can enter the rearview camera, which can cause the image to fail to display in reverse.
NHTSA Campaign No. 26V423 expands an earlier related recall, 20V-438 [2]. A missing rearview image reduces the driver’s view and raises the risk of a crash. Owner letters are due on or about August 24, 2026.
May 14, 2026: Owners File a Proposed Class Action over the Airbag Recall
Odyssey owners sued Honda on May 13-14, 2026, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The proposed class action alleges Honda knew about the side-airbag defect for years before the 2026 recall [3].
The suit covers 2018-2022 Odysseys and claims the recall’s software fix does not cure the defect. The docket number has not been independently confirmed on a public court record.

Honda submitted NHTSA Campaign No. 26V227 for 440,830 Odysseys made from Jan. 24, 2017, to Jun. 3, 2022 [4]. Incorrect airbag-control settings can let a rough-road impact trigger the side and side-curtain airbags.
Honda’s own count lists 130 warranty claims and 25 injury reports as of April 2, 2026, and no deaths. The remedy is a free reprogram or replacement of the airbag control unit.
September 16, 2024: Seven Owners Sue Honda over Nine-Speed Transmissions
Seven owners, including a couple who bought a 2018 Odyssey, sued American Honda Motor Co. in the Northern District of California, San Jose Division. They say the ZF nine-speed transmission jerks, hesitates and loses power.
CarComplaints identified the 9-speed transmission case as Kevin Moore v. American Honda Motor Co., Inc [5]. The suit names several Honda models, including the Odyssey.
February 16, 2024: Honda Recalls Odysseys over a Steering-Gearbox Defect
Honda issued a stop-sale and safety recall for a small number of 2023-2024 Odysseys. Improperly fastened bolts in the electric power-steering gearbox could let moisture in.
Honda’s service bulletin 24-004 told dealers to hold the affected vans until repair parts arrived [6]. Left unrepaired, the moisture could eventually lock the steering.
November 8, 2023: NHTSA Opens a 248,999-Vehicle Crankshaft Recall
NHTSA Campaign No. 23V-751 covers 248,999 vehicles across seven Honda and Acura models, including 2018-2019 Odysseys [7]. A manufacturing defect in the engine crankshaft can wear down a connecting-rod bearing.
Left unrepaired, the worn bearing can eventually cause the engine to seize while the vehicle is being driven, according to NHTSA’s report.
February 6, 2020: Honda Recalls 241,339 Odysseys over a Fire Risk
Honda submitted NHTSA Campaign No. 20V-066 for 241,339 Odysseys from model years 2018 through 2020 [8]. A pinched third-row power-outlet wire harness could short and raise the risk of a fire.
Owner notification began March 16, 2020, after Honda said it had received several fire reports linked to the wiring before the recall.
Which Honda Odysseys Are Affected?
Honda has recalled Odyssey minivans from five model-year ranges, each tied to its own recall campaign:
- Honda Odysseys from Jan. 24, 2017, through Jun. 3, 2022 (model years 2018-2022), under NHTSA Campaign No. 26V227, the side-airbag recall.
- 2018-2020 Odysseys covered by NHTSA Campaign No. 26V423, the rearview-camera recall announced in July 2026.
- 2023-2024 Odysseys named in NHTSA Campaign No. 24V114, the steering-gearbox recall from February 2024.
- 2018-2019 Odysseys, among six other Honda and Acura models, named in NHTSA Campaign No. 23V-751, the crankshaft recall from November 2023.

Why Were the Honda Odysseys Recalled?
Honda recalled the Odyssey because a software flaw in the airbag control module misread road impacts. The flaw let the side and side-curtain airbags deploy without a crash.
The 2026 rearview-camera recall exists because water can enter the camera, which can keep the image from displaying in reverse. The 2024 steering-gearbox recall followed reports that loose bolts let moisture reach internal parts, which can eventually lock the steering.
The 2023 crankshaft recall covered a manufacturing defect that let a connecting-rod bearing wear down and seize the engine. The 2020 wiring recall addressed a pinched wire harness in the third-row power outlet that could short and start a fire.
Reported Incidents, Injuries, or Illnesses
Honda counted 130 warranty claims and 25 injuries in its own records for the airbag recall, covering Jan. 24, 2017, through Apr. 2, 2026. No deaths have been reported.
No independent study has confirmed them. Reported incidents are not proof that every affected van will fail the same way.
The 2020 wiring recall has its own history of fire reports. Honda received an initial fire report in August 2018, with no cause stated at the time.
A second fire report followed in April 2019, and Honda bought back that vehicle to examine it. Honda said it had received three fire reports in total before it identified the wiring cause in January 2020.

Transport Canada issued its own recall 2026181 for the same side-airbag defect as NHTSA Campaign No. 26V227 [9]. It was published April 9, 2026, and updated April 24, 2026. The notice gives no unit count.
Transport Canada also issued a separate 2020 recall, 2020343, for Odyssey rear sliding-door handle cables that can freeze and keep a door from latching.

Two lawsuits currently name the Honda Odyssey. One suit, filed by Kevin Moore and other owners, accuses Honda of a defective nine-speed transmission.
