What’s the Problem?

This recall affects Walmart Hyper Tough 2 Ton Jack Stands, model 2TJS, sold under part number 0085001232400, according to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The recalled jack stands may not be able to support the rated load without collapsing unexpectedly, NHTSA said. A sudden drop of the jack stand can increase the risk of injury to persons nearby or under the lifted vehicle.

If you purchased a jack stand that is affected by this recall, you should stop using it immediately and return it to Walmart for a full refund.

This recall began in September 2020.

Jack Stand Injury Accident Statistics

The average passenger vehicle weighs more than 4,000 pounds. When a defective jack stand fails, the person working beneath the vehicle is likely to sustain severe and potentially deadly injuries, including:

  • Crushing injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Amputation of fingers or limbs
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Paralysis
  • Permanent scarring or disfigurement
  • Permanent disability
  • Wrongful death

The NHTSA estimates that more than 4,800 people in the U.S. receive emergency medical treatment each year in connection with jack stand failures. While most of these people are treated and released, around 4% require extended hospitalization.

NHTSA found that about 40% of victims are injured while using a jack stand to lift a vehicle for repair, and 16% are hurt while changing a tire. Approximately 75% of injuries occur when the car or jack slips or falls out of position, and 18% result from the loss of pressure in the jack.
