The DockATot Deluxe+ infant lounger has been linked to reports of infant deaths during sleep. A U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission official says the Deluxe+ is unsafe for a baby to sleep in. November 7, 2024: Consumer Reports Covers Sleep Marketing Limits

Consumer Reports said products once advertised for infant sleep, like the DockATot and numerous look-alikes, are no longer allowed to be marketed for infant sleep [1]. The report also said knockoff DockATot loungers were still offered on Amazon. At least four different third-party sellers listed them.

July 12, 2023: NBC News Adds a Clarification

NBC News updated its report on lounger deaths. It said DockATot agreed to phase out the Deluxe+ after the CPSC‘s enforcement action and denied wrongdoing [2]. DockATot said its loungers are not unsafe if used while babies are awake. The clarification said a Nevada coroner found that an 11-month-old’s death in March was caused by fentanyl and was not linked to a DockATot lounger.

November 9, 2022: CPSC Commissioner Says Deluxe+ Is Unsafe for Sleep

CPSC Commissioner Richard Trumka issued a statement that the DockATot Deluxe+ is unsafe for sleep and that CPSC sent DockATot a notice of violation [3]. CPSC told DockATot it cannot import, distribute or sell any Deluxe+ made on or after June 23, 2022. The statement told parents to stop using the Deluxe+ immediately.

What Is DockATot Deluxe+?

The Deluxe+ is a lounger made by DockATot. According to the DockATot FAQ, the Deluxe+ dock is not intended for overnight sleep, and babies using it should be supervised at all times [4]. The same page says the dock is not designed to contain a child. Babies can begin to crawl or scoot unexpectedly. CPSC said DockATot marketed the Deluxe+ as a sleep product even though it is not safe for sleep.

Who May Be Affected?

Families whose baby slept or napped in a DockATot Deluxe+ made on or after June 23, 2022 may be affected. NBC News reported that a 10-week-old boy died while sleeping in a Deluxe+ in July 2020 in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. That earlier, separate report predates the notice. Reported Injuries or Damages

The CPSC statement said: “It is unsafe for your baby to sleep in a DockATot Deluxe+; immediately discontinue its use. There are publicly available reports of infant deaths associated with the product.” NBC News reported that at least five babies died in incidents involving DockATot loungers from 2020 to 2022. The count came from reports on SaferProducts.gov. CPSC vets those reports before posting them, but it does not guarantee they are accurate or complete. NBC later clarified that one Nevada report was withdrawn.

Recall and Regulatory Background

No DockATot recall exists. A notice of violation does not by itself establish that anyone is liable for a death or injury. The Consumer Federation of America and Kids In Danger called on DockATot and CPSC to recall the loungers immediately [5].

Evidence to Preserve

Keep the following items safe and do not throw anything away after a sleep incident:
  • The DockATot or Deluxe+ itself, with its label or tag showing the model and manufacture date
  • Proof of purchase and order emails
  • Photographs of the baby, the product and the sleep space
  • Medical, emergency and coroner records
  • Messages with the seller or DockATot
  • Any SaferProducts.gov report number
