Update: Fluoroquinolone MDL Moving Forward in Minnesota
March 22, 2017 – Product liability lawsuits alleging peripheral neuropathy from Levaquin, Cipro and Avelox are moving forward in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota, with at least 10 bellwether cases being prepped for trial. Per a recent update, there are at least 738 lawsuits pending in the fluoroquinolone multidistrict litigation (MDL No. 2642), most of which involve Levaquin.
Levaquin and Peripheral Neuropathy
In August 2013, the FDA strengthened its warning that Levaquin may cause peripheral neuropathy, a severe and potentially irreversible form of nerve damage. This condition occurs when nerves between the brain and body become severely damaged. Symptoms of Levaquin-induced peripheral neuropathy include:
- Change in sensation to light touch, pain, or temperature
- Change in sense of body position
- Loss of reflexes
- Muscle wasting
Fluoroquinolone Antibiotics Linked to Aortic Aneurism: JAMA Study
Scientists suspect that fluoroquinolones break down collagen, a structural protein found in tendons and the lining of the aorta. A November 2015 study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that fluoroquinolones were associated with a 2-fold increased risk of abdominal dissection and aortic aneurism within 60 days of beginning treatment with the drugs. Aortic aneurism occurs when a bulge develops in the aorta, a condition that can be fatal if the bulge ruptures and causes internal bleeding.
“Use of fluoroquinolones was associated with an increased risk of aortic aneurysm and dissection,” the researchers concluded. “While these were rare events, physicians should be aware of this possible drug safety risk associated with fluoroquinolone therapy.”
Hillary Clinton’s Medical Condition may be the Result of Taking Levaquin
September 16, 2016 – Democratic Presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton has been taking Levaquin to treat her recent bout of pneumonia, according to medical records released this week. Clinton raised concerns when she appeared to struggle while walking after a 9/11 ceremony, and some have speculated that this behavior may have been caused by an adverse drug reaction rather than by pneumonia.
Levaquin Class Action Lawsuit Filed in Pennsylvania
August 17, 2016 – A class action lawsuit was filed last week against Johnson & Johnson in Pennsylvania by a woman who claims she developed permanent peripheral neuropathy after taking Levaquin. Plaintiff Michelin Rowell claims Levaquin is a defective drug and that J&J committed fraud when it failed to warn about the peripheral neuropathy risk with the medication. The complaint is: Rowell v. Johnson & Johnson et al, Case No. 2:16-CV-04369 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
Has a Class Action Been Filed?
No class action lawsuit has been filed to date in the Levaquin litigation. However, a multidistrict litigation (MDL) was established in the District of Minnesota for lawsuits alleging peripheral neuropathy from it and 2 other similar antibiotics, Avelox (moxifloxacin) and Cipro (ciprofloxacin). Another MDL was created for lawsuits alleging tendonitis and other tendon injuries from Levaquin in Minnesota in 2008. The litigation in both MDLs is still ongoing.
