The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) recently required GlaxoSmithKline, the maker of the popular asthma inhaler Advair (fluticasone and salmeterol) to add new warnings on the product labeling warning of an increased risk of hospitalization and death.
The Problem With LABAs
Advair belongs to a class of inhalers called Long-Acting Beta-Agonists (LABAs).
Advair inhalers relax the muscles in bronchial passages, allowing more air to flow. The medication generally provides immediate relief to asthma sufferers but unfortunately, does not treat the underlying inflammation. This creates the risk of a life-threatening condition.
