Salmonella Food Poisoning (Salmonellosis)

Salmonella bacteria are a group of microscopic living creatures that are among the most frequently reported cause of foodborne illnesses nationwide. The Salmonella family includes nearly 2,500 stereotypes of bacteria, the most common of which are Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella Typhimurium. These strains account for about half of all human infection.

According to the FSIS, salmonellosis causes an estimated 1.4 million cases of foodborne illness and more than 400 deaths each year in the United States alone. Although in certain individuals salmonellosis may be asymptomatic, most people experience some or all of the following signs and symptoms within eight to 72 hours after contaminated food is consumed:

  • diarrhea (which may be bloody)
  • abdominal cramps
  • fever
  • chills
  • headache
  • nausea
  • vomiting

Most Salmonella outbreaks can be avoided through cleanliness – hand washing with soap and hot water can do wonders to prevent infection. By using filtered drinking water, washing produce thoroughly, and not consuming undercooked foods such as eggs or meat, you can also greatly reduce your chance of being exposed to Salmonella bacteria.
