The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) [1] is warning consumers to avoid unapproved bodybuilding supplements known as SARMs, or selective androgen receptor modulators, as the products have been linked to an increased risk for serious side effects including liver damage, heart attack, blood clots and death.

What is LGD-4033?

LGD-4033, better known as Ligandrol by bodybuilders and others in the fitness community, is an investigational SARM used for the treatment of muscle wasting conditions and osteoporosis. Ligandrol was initially synthesized by Ligand Pharmaceuticals, and is currently under development by Viking Therapeutics.

What’s in it?

All kinds of stuff: 4-((R)-2-((R)-2,2,2-trifluoro-1-hydroxyethyl)pyrrolidin-1-yl)-2-trifluoroMethyl)benzonitrile

What are SARMs?

Unlike traditional anabolic steroids, SARMs work specifically on muscle tissue, which is why manufacturers and proponents of the products consider them “safe steroids.” In theory, SARMS mimic the effects of testosterone in the body; however, unlike synthetic testosterone or anabolic steroids, they are directly targeted at skeletal muscle. However, given that they are so new, and may be adulterated with any number of unregulated substances, the jury is still out as to the relative safety of SARMs.

SARM vs. SERM

There is a good deal of confusion regarding the difference between a SARM and a SERM. As stated above, SARM stands for selective androgen receptor modulator, whose mechanism of action stimulates androgen receptors in muscle and bone cells, which assists with growth. SERMs, or selective estrogen receptor modulators, are drugs that block estrogen from being recycled back into the pituitary glands, and are not considered to have performance enhancing properties.

Most cases involving pharmaceuticals allege that a drug was sold with design, manufacturing, and/or marketing defects, which typically refers to a company’s failure to warn of a certain side effect. In the case of Ligandrol, our attorneys suspect that patients may be able to take legal action in light of claims that the manufacturer failed to adequately warn doctors and patients about the risk of severe liver damage and cardiovascular complications.
