Phenytoin toxicity occurs when the daily dose of Dilantin is increased or your body is overdosed with the drug, either accidentally or intentionally. The suitable blood concentration of Dilantin typically ranges from 10 micrograms per milliliter to 20 micrograms per milliliter. When the level reaches 30 micrograms per milliliter or more, phenytoin toxicity may result.

What’s the problem?
Phenytoin toxicity may progress into cerebellar degeneration and other potentially irreversible health complications. Numerous studies indicate that cerebellar side effects including phenytoin toxicity may be linked to the long-term use of Dilantin. A 2013 study published in Neurology Asia (PDF) indicated that long term phenytoin use could develop into cerebellar atrophy.
In 2008, another study published in the Journal of Clinical Pharmacy and Therapeutics found that phenytoin toxicity was a frequently missed cause of cerebellar syndrome.
