Cargill has stated that all ground turkey production has been suspended at the plant until it is able to determine the source of the outbreak. The company said it initiated the recall after its own internal investigation on the issue.

“Given our concern for what has happened, and our desire to do what is right for our consumers and customers, we are voluntarily removing our ground turkey products from the marketplace,” said Steve Willardsen, president of Cargill’s turkey processing business.

Consumers are being advised to return all recalled Cargill turkey product to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Salmonella Heidelberg

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Salmonella Heidelberg accounts for less than four percent of all confirmed salmonella cases nationwide each year. This makes Salmonella Heidelberg the fourth most common strain of salmonella behind serotypes Typhimurium, Enteritidis, and Newport. Contaminated poultry and poultry products are the most common food associated with salmonella poisoning, but if conditions and food preparation equipment is unsanitary, any food can become contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. Signs and symptoms of Salmonella Heidelberg food poisoning may include:

  • abdominal pain
  • cramping
  • tenderness
  • chills
  • diarrhea
  • fever
  • muscle pain
  • nausea
  • vomiting
