Why Was Black Dried Fungus Recalled?

Black Dried Fungus was recalled because the Wei-Chuan slices have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The California Department of Public Health notified the FDA that the product was contaminated with the bacteria.

The notice does not say how the contamination happened. Production of the product has been suspended while the FDA and the company continue their investigation of the source of the problem.

Reported Incidents, Injuries, or Illnesses

The FDA says no illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem. Food Safety News repeated that statement in its coverage on July 9, 2025 [3].

The notice says healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, the infection can get into the bloodstream.

The CDC says some groups have an increased chance of infection and of serious illness [4]. Those groups are children younger than 5 and adults 65 and older.

They also include adults 50 and older with underlying medical problems, and people with a weakened immune system, the CDC says.
