What is the Wright Dynasty Acetabular Cup?
The Wright Dynasty Acetabular System is a modular cup designed to be used in hip replacement surgery. The device is constructed of Biofoam, a bone-like titanium composite with a rough texture that “bites” into the bone for a firmer grip. The Dynasty System is manufactured by Wright Medical, and was approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in October of 2009.
Wright Hip Replacement Lawsuits
In February of 2012, the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) consolidated all federal lawsuits involving the Wright Conserve, ProFemur, Dynasty, and Lineage hip implants into a Multidistrict Litigation (MDL) in Georgia before Judge William S. Duffey. As of April 2014, at least 78 lawsuits involving the Wright Conserve hip replacement have been included in the MDL.
What are These Lawsuits Alleging?
Plaintiffs in Wright Hip Replacement Lawsuits allege that the devices were designed defectively, and that the manufacturer failed to adequately warn the public and medical communities about these problems. When the components of the all-metal implant rub together, over time they shed toxic metal debris into the patient’s tissues, bones and blood.
FDA has cautioned that metal-on-metal hip replacement devices like the Wright Dynasty System can cause metallosis, swelling, life-threatening allergic reactions and soft tissue growth. Patients with these complications are usually advised to undergo revision surgery, a painful and time-consuming process in which the defective implant is removed and replaced with a new one.
