What’s the problem?

November 7, 2011 - The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today that Whittington’s Jerky is currently recalling approximately 126 pounds of the following beef jerky products because they may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria:

  • 2-oz. packages of "Whittington's Original Beef Jerky"
  • 4-oz. packages of "Whittington's Original Beef Jerky"

These products can be identified by the establishment number ‘EST. 21257,’ which is located inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The contamination was discovered as a result of routine testing by the FSIS. The agency determined that the affected beef jerky was distributed by Whittington’s before test results were confirmed. To date, there have been no illnesses reported in connection with this recall. If you are concerned about an illness, you should contact your healthcare provider immediately.

How is Salmonella Food Poisoning Treated?

Most otherwise healthy individuals recover from salmonella food poisoning without medical treatment. However, you should always consult your healthcare professional immediately if you begin to experience symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal cramps. Salmonella food poisoning treatments may include:

  • Antibiotics;
  • Avoiding solid food until symptoms subside;
  • Drinking plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration;
  • Rest.

If salmonella food poisoning does not resolve quickly, hospitalization and rehydration with intravenous fluids may be necessary.
