UTV Accidents: Most Common Injuries
Because of their windshields, seat belts, and steering wheel, many people mistakenly believe that UTVs are just as safe as standard passenger vehicles. However, nothing could be further from the truth, as UTVs lack both the stability and safety features of conventional automobiles. For this reason, even a seemingly minor UTV crash may cause serious, potentially life-threatening injuries, such as:
- Head Injuries: Concussions and traumatic brain injuries (TBI) are the most common injuries associated with UTV accidents.
- Bone Fractures: UTV riders may suffer arm and leg fractures, or break their collar bone if they’re ejected from a UTV, or if the vehicle rolls over on them.
- Spinal Cord, Neck, and Back Injuries: Riders ejected from a UTV may develop spinal cord injuries, often leading to full or partial paralysis. If someone you know has been ejected from a UTV, they should not be moved or attempt to move, especially if they complain of pain in their back or neck.
- Internal Bleeding: The impact of a UTV crash may cause internal bleeding and/or organ damage. Because these types of injuries don’t always manifest immediately, you should seek medical attention after any UTV accident, even if riders don’t appear to be hurt at first.
- Burns: If the fuel line of a UTV ruptures, gasoline may leak or spill from the vehicle. Occupants may experience painful and disfiguring burns if the fuel comes in contact with an ignition source and catches fire.
