Gianturco-Roehm Bird’s Nest Vena Cava Filter Lawsuit

Cook Medical’s Gianturco-Roehm Birds Nest Vena Cava Filter is used to prevent a life-threatening blockage of an artery in the lungs (pulmonary embolism). Unfortunately, the filter itself is potentially life-threatening and many patients were not aware of the risks prior to being implanted with the device.

What is the Gianturco-Roehm Birds Nest Vena Cava Filter?

Manufactured and marketed by Cook Medical, the Gianturco-Roehm Birds Nest Vena Cava Filter was designed to overcome some of the disadvantages of Cook's Greenfield IVC filter.

The device is intended for percutaneous introduction through the jugular, subclavian and femoral approaches, and consists of 2 rigid, V-shaped struts, between which are attached four 25-cm-long, 0.18-mm diameter stainless steel wires. The Gianturco-Roehm Birds Nest Vena Cava Filter was approved for clinical use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1989.

What's the Problem?

IVC Filters were developed to only be used for a limited period of time, however, as these devices are implanted surgically, often times in emergency rooms, it is unlikely that the surgeons will not see these patients again which increases the likelihood that the filter will remain in place for much longer than it should. When IVC Filters remain in place too long, the likelihood of the device splintering increases.

IVC Filter Wrongful Death

Many people implanted with an IVC Filter are at risk for the above adverse health complications. One of these risks involves the vena cava filter migrating to the heart. This migration has led to the death of some patients.

In fact, the FDA recognizes these risks and encourages immediate follow-up and IVC Filter removal after the risk of pulmonary embolism has passed. Unfortunately, removal surgery may also involve significant risks. If you’ve experienced the wrongful death of a loved one resulting from an IVC Filter, or believe there’s a risk, it’s important you know your legal options.
