What is the Gianturco-Roehm Birds Nest Vena Cava Filter?

Manufactured and marketed by Cook Medical, the Gianturco-Roehm Birds Nest Vena Cava Filter was designed to overcome some of the disadvantages of Cook’s Greenfield IVC filter.

The device is intended for percutaneous introduction through the jugular, subclavian and femoral approaches, and consists of 2 rigid, V-shaped struts, between which are attached four 25-cm-long, 0.18-mm diameter stainless steel wires. The Gianturco-Roehm Birds Nest Vena Cava Filter was approved for clinical use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1989.

What’s the Problem?

IVC Filters were developed to only be used for a limited period of time, however, as these devices are implanted surgically, often times in emergency rooms, it is unlikely that the surgeons will not see these patients again which increases the likelihood that the filter will remain in place for much longer than it should.
