What’s the Problem?

September 21, 2017 – According to an FDA Recall Notice [1] issued Tuesday, all 11-ounce Nitro Cold Brew cans of Death Wish were processed in a way that “could lead to the growth and production of the deadly toxin, botulinum.”

Botulinum causes botulism in humans, producing symptoms including “general weakness, dizziness, double-vision and trouble with speaking or swallowing… [and] difficulty breathing,” according to the FDA. Anyone experiencing these symptoms after drinking Death Wish Nitro Cold Brew should seek immediate medical care.

“Our customers’ safety is of paramount importance and Death Wish Coffee is taking this significant, proactive step… of recalling all Death Wish Nitro cans from shelves,” said Mike Brown, founder and owner of Death Wish Coffee Co., in a statement [2].

Customers who purchased Death Wish 11-ounce Nitro Cold Brew cans via the company’s website are guaranteed a refund within 60 days. The products were also sold at independent retailers and grocery stores, mostly on the East Coast.

Death Wish Coffee Co. has ceased production of its Nitro Cold Brew “until an additional step in the manufacturing process is implemented,” the company said.

No cases of botulism have yet been linked to Death Wish Coffee, according to the FDA, with the company calling the recall “a precautionary step.”

The Threat of Botulism

Botulism is a severe, potentially fatal, disease. Most people who get botulism require hospitalization. They may have to stay in the hospital for days, weeks, and even months before they are well enough to go home.

Symptoms of botulism typically include varying degrees of:

  • Difficulty swallowing or speaking
  • Dry mouth
  • Facial weakness on both sides of the face
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Drooping eyelids
  • Trouble breathing
  • Nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps
  • Paralysis

Many people with botulism require a ventilator to help them breathe. People with botulism may also need treatment with a drug called an antitoxin that prevents the toxin from causing more harm, as the toxin that causes botulism is one of the most deadly toxins known. Even a small amount of it can make many people sick. Without prompt medical treatment, people with botulism can die from complications.
