E. Coli Food Poisoning
E. coli 0157:H7 is a potentially deadly foodborne pathogen that causes diarrheal illness, often with bloody stools. Although most healthy adults recover within about a week, certain individuals with compromised immune systems can develop a severe form of kidney failure known as Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS).
If left untreated, HUS can lead to serious kidney damage and even death. Signs and symptoms of E. coli food poisoning may include:
- severe stomach cramps and stomach tenderness
- diarrhea (which may be watery or bloody)
- nausea
- vomiting
