Why was the Calcium Gluconate Recall Issued?
On February 7, 2014, the FDA issued a press release [1] instructing healthcare professionals to follow up with patients who were administered calcium gluconate 10% injections manufactured at the Rx Formulations plant in Mesa, Ariz. between Nov. 7 and Dec. 11, 2013. Testing performed by officials at the FDA confirmed microbial contamination in lot #778961 of the company’s calcium gluconate IV product. The tests found gram-positive rod bacteria in the supplements. A tainted IV medication puts patients at risk of severe bacterial infections and other adverse health complications.
What is Calcium Gluconate?
Calcium gluconate injections are prescribed to prevent or treat low blood calcium levels in patients who do not get a sufficient amount of calcium from their diets. The supplement may be used to treat conditions caused by low calcium levels including:
- Bone loss (osteoporosis)
- Weak bones (osteomalacia/rickets)
- Decreased activity of the parathyroid gland (hypothyroidism)
- Latent tetany (muscle disease)
Calcium gluconate supplements may also be prescribed to at-risk individuals to ensure they are getting enough calcium (e.g., women who are pregnant, nursing, or postmenopausal, people taking certain medications such as phenytoin, phenobarbital, or prednisone).
FDA Recommendation
The FDA is advising healthcare providers and hospital staff to check their supplies, and quarantine any Rx Formulations Calcium Gluconate affected by this recall. Patients who received any medication that was labeled as sterile produced by the company between Nov. 7 and Dec. 11, 2013, and who have concerns, should call their doctor right away.
