What’s the Problem?
This recall affects all lots within expiry of Adam’s Secret Extra Strength 1500 and Adam’s Secret Extra Strength 3000 capsules to the consumer level, according to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) [1].
Consumers with underlying medical issues who take Adam’s Secret Extra Strength 1500 or Adam’s Secret Extra Strength 3000 capsules with undeclared sildenafil and tadalafil may experience serious health risks,” FDA said. “The presence of sildenafil and/or tadalafil in Adam’s Secret Extra Strength products makes them unapproved new drugs for which the safety and efficacy have not been established and therefore subject to recall.
PDE-5 inhibitors have been found to interact with nitrates in certain prescription medications, lowering blood pressure to dangerous levels that could be life-threatening. People with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure (hypertension), or heart disease often take nitrates.
Adam’s Secret Extra Strength is marketed as a dietary supplement for male sexual enhancement (erectile dysfunction) and is packaged in blister foil sheets and a box containing 10 capsules.
The recalled supplements were sold online at www.adamssecret.co nationwide in the U.S.
If you purchased any Adam’s Secret capsules that are affected by this recall, you should not take them, and either throw them away or return them to the point of purchase for a refund.
Anyone concerned about a potential adverse reaction to this medication should contact their healthcare provider immediately.
This recall began on February 15, 2021.
Risk of Dietary Supplements Adulterated with Unapproved Drugs: Study
A March 2022 study published in The Journal of Clinical Pharmacology [2] compared the determination of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) adulteration in dietary supplements from 2007 through 2016, to the most recent 5-year period of 2017 through 2021.
The researchers found that between 2007 and 2021, at least 1068 unique products were found to be adulterated with APIs. Sexual enhancement and weight loss dietary supplements are the most common products adulterated with APIs. Sibutramine, a drug removed from the market due to cardiovascular adverse events, is the most included adulterant API in weight loss products.
The study’s authors concluded that the lack of disclosure of APIs in dietary supplements, circumventing the normal procedure with clinician oversight of prescription drug use, and the use of APIs that are banned by the FDA are important health risks for consumers.
