Hand Injuries in Children from Contact with Vacuum Cleaners: BMJ Study
A study published in BMJ Journals in January 2002 [2.] looked at the incidence of injuries to young children associated with contact to a domestic vacuum cleaner.
For the study, the researchers examined all cases of children attending with an injury sustained because of contact with a domestic vacuum cleaner over a period of 1 year.
They identified at least 4 children as having suffered friction burns to a hand after contact with a vacuum cleaner. All required medical treatment and several review appointments before satisfactory resolution was achieved.
The authors concluded that although the number of cases seen was small, the potential for significant injury must be emphasized and public awareness increased in an attempt to reduce morbidity.
