GE Appliances, a Haier company, recalled about 132,000 U.S. ranges and 12,960 more in Canada, sold under seven brands including GE, GE Profile and Café. CPSC announced the voluntary recall on December 8, 2021.

The recall covers 20-, 24- and 30-inch free-standing and slide-in ranges, identified by a serial code on the unit’s label. An unsecured anti-tip bracket can let the range tip over.

Owners can keep using the range but should stop placing objects on an open oven door until GE Appliances inspects the bracket for free. Neither CPSC nor GE Appliances has published a termination notice, so the recall remains open.

December 8, 2021: CPSC Announces the Recall

GE Appliances and the CPSC announced a voluntary Fast Track recall on December 8, 2021, covering ranges sold under seven U.S. brand names, per the CPSC recall notice[1].

The recall, numbered 22-028, covers about 132,000 ranges sold in the United States and about 12,960 sold in Canada. No injuries or incidents were reported, and neither agency has published a later update.

Which GE Ranges Are Affected?

The recall covers free-standing and slide-in electric and gas ranges sold under two related sets of brand names, with sizes and serial codes that differ by country:

• United States: 20-, 24- and 30-inch GE, GE Profile, Café, Haier, Hotpoint, Crosley and Conservator ranges with a serial number starting “HS” or “LS”.
• Canada: 24-inch and 30-inch GE, Moffat, GE Profile, Haier and Insignia ranges with a serial number ending “P”, as stated in Health Canada‘s notice.

These ranges were sold nationwide from May-July 2021 at Lowe’s, Home Depot, Best Buy and other stores, for between $580 and $4,600 depending on the model.

Each unit’s brand and model number are printed on a label. GE Appliances’ recall page lists every affected model prefix for each of the seven brands[2].

Why Were GE Ranges Recalled?

GE Ranges were recalled because the anti-tip bracket that secures a range to the wall or floor can be left unsecured. The range can then tip over when a heavy object rests on an open oven door.

Tipping can spill hot food or liquids from cookware, risking burns to anyone nearby. GE Appliances is offering a free inspection and repair instead of a refund or replacement.

The recall moved through CPSC’s Fast Track Recall process, which lets a company work with the agency to announce a fix quickly. GE Appliances began offering the free repair the same day it announced the recall.

Reported Incidents, Injuries, or Illnesses

GE Appliances and the CPSC report no injuries or incidents connected to the tip-over hazard covered by this recall. Both the company’s recall page and the CPSC recall notice cited above state that same finding.

A recall does not automatically establish liability, and no incidents being reported does not guarantee every affected range is free of the defect. Owners should still have the anti-tip bracket checked, even if the range appears to be working normally.

Consumers who notice a tip, a loose bracket or a related injury can report it to the CPSC through SaferProducts.gov. They can also contact GE Appliances directly for a free repair.

Owners of an affected GE range should take these steps:

1. Stop placing any object on the open oven door until the range’s anti-tip bracket has been inspected.
2. Find the range’s brand, model number and serial number on the label on the unit.
3. Check that model and serial number against the recall list on GE Appliances’ recall page.
4. Call GE Appliances toll-free at 877-247-9770, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit geappliances.com/ge/recall to schedule a free in-home inspection and repair.
5. Continue using the range normally once the bracket has been inspected or repaired.
6. Do not return the range to the store, since retailers cannot accept it back.

Other Recalls, Warnings, or International Actions

Health Canada issued a parallel notice of this same December 8, 2021 tip-over recall, covering about 12,960 ranges sold there under the same remedy[3].

GE has recalled ranges before. In 2009, GE and the CPSC recalled about 28,000 GE Profile dual-fuel ranges after a wiring defect caused five fires.

In 2015, the CPSC announced GE agreed to pay a $3.5 million civil penalty for failing to timely report that hazard and a defect in Profile and Monogram dishwashers[4].
