What’s the Problem?

According to the CPSC Recall Notice [1], this recall affects 30-inch, 24-inch, and 20-inch free-standing and slide-in electric and gas ranges, with seven brand names: GE, GE Profile, Café, Haier, Hotpoint, Crosley and Conservator.

“The ranges can tip over when a heavy object is placed on an open oven door and the anti-tip-over bracket is not secured to the wall or floor, posing a tip-over hazard and risk of burn injuries from hot food or liquids in cookware,” CPSC said.

The brand name, model number and serial number are printed on a label visible on each unit. Ranges with a serial number that starts with either “HS” or “LS” are included in this recall.

The recalled GE ranges were sold at Lowe’s, Home Depot, Best Buy and other home improvement and home appliance stores nationwide and online from May 2021 through July 2021 for between $580 and $4,600, depending on the model.

This recall began on December 8, 2021.

The CPSC Recall Number for these items is 22-028.

Health Risks of Gas Ranges

The issue of gas range health risks has recently caught national attention, as the CPSC considers regulating the appliances. Environmentalists and public health experts have long warned of the risks of gas ranges. One study found that indoor gas stoves were responsible for approximately 13% of childhood asthma cases in the United States.

The gas that’s piped into your house to supply a range is virtually all methane. When you burn methane to cook food, it turns into carbon dioxide. However, unburned methane seeps out of loose fittings and faulty stovetop igniters. Every pound of methane released into the air is 30 to 86 times more effective at warming the planet than a pound of carbon dioxide.

Methane leaks can also cause explosions. If you smell gas in your home, leave the building immediately and contact your gas company. The distinctive rotten-egg smell is from chemicals that gas companies add to the methane to make it easier to detect, since the gas is naturally odorless.

The American Public Health Association (APHA) and American Medical Association (AMA) have urged consumers to transition away from gas in favor of induction stoves, which use electromagnets to heat up food. These stoves are growing in popularity as consumers choose them for climate, health and safety reasons, though they can cost more than twice as much as a gas range.
