Esmeralda Weight Loss Pill Recalled by FDA
On March 25, 2014, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a nationwide recall [1] for all lots of Esmeralda softgels to the user level after the product was found to contain the undeclared active ingredients sibutramine and/or phenolphthalein.
Sibutramine is an appetite suppressant that was banned from the U.S. in 2010 after it was found to increase the risk of seizures, heart attacks, arrhythmia and strokes. Phenolphthalein is a substance that was previously used in over-the-counter (OTC) laxatives, but because of concerns of carcinogenicity, it is no longer approved for marketing in the U.S.
According to the FDA:
“These undeclared ingredients make these products unapproved new drugs for which safety and efficacy have not been established. At this time no illnesses or injuries have been reported to New Life Nutritional Center in connection with these products.”
