What’s the problem?
May 23, 2012 – The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a press release [1] today announcing that L.A. LINK (HUNTINGTON BEACH) CORPORATION is recalling the following items out of an abundance of caution:
- Shiitake-Ya Brand Gourmet Shiitake Slices – ‘SELL BY date’ of 04/16/2013
These mushrooms are packaged in 6 oz. plastic jars, with the SELL BY date located at the bottom portion of the rear label.
This recall was initiated after a routine sample gathered by the FDA was determined to be contaminated with carbendazim, fluoranthene, and pyrene. The manufacturer has decided to recall the mushrooms in question to assure the safety of their customers.
Consumers who have any of the above-listed mushrooms in their possession should discard them immediately or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Anyone concerned about a food poisoning illness should contact their healthcare provider. To date, there have been no illnesses reported in connection with this recall.
What is the Health Risk of Shiitake Mushrooms?
Shiitake mushrooms are potentially unsafe when they are used in larger amounts as medicine, or when eaten raw. In some people, shiitake mushrooms can cause stomach discomfort, blood abnormalities, and skin swelling. They may also make the skin more sensitive to the sun and can cause allergic skin reactions and breathing problems in certain individuals.
How Do You Treat Shiitake Mushroom Dermatitis?
Shiitake mushroom dermatitis is a rare skin rash caused by a hypersensitive reaction to lentinan, a bioactive component of shiitake mushrooms found in the cell wall. Studies have found that dermatitis occurs when shiitake mushrooms are undercooked (at 100°C or less).
Patients who develop dermatitis should avoid consuming undercooked shiitake mushrooms. The rash usually occurs 2‐5 days after consuming shiitake mushrooms and spontaneously resolves after 10‐14 days without treatment; however, antihistamines and topical or oral corticosteroids can be used to manage symptoms.
