Update: Salmonella Cases Increase After Outbreak at Popular San Diego Restaurant
May 8, 2025 – San Diego County has now recorded at least 37 probable and confirmed cases of people who have gotten sick with Salmonella after dining at the Aladdin Mediterranean Café in Clairemont between April 25 to May 1. The ages of individuals affected range from 1 to 90 years old, with 9 people hospitalized to date. The source of the Salmonella outbreak has not been identified and the investigation is ongoing.
Lawsuit Filed by Affected Patrons
On April 26, 2025, Daniel Meza and Nubia Munguia dined at Aladdin Mediterranean Café, consuming a lamb and chicken dish and other menu items. Within days, both suffered symptoms including diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and dehydration.
Ms. Munguia required hospitalization, and both later tested positive for Salmonella. The couple has filed a lawsuit, marking the first legal action in San Diego County related to this outbreak.
Public Health Response and Findings
San Diego County’s Public Health Department has linked at least 24 illnesses—including seven hospitalizations—to the café, most from patrons who dined on April 25 or 26.
While the contaminated food item has not yet been identified, health records show the restaurant previously received seven violations for improper food temperature regulation. These prior issues may have contributed to the outbreak.
Understanding Salmonella and Its Impact
Salmonella is a common bacterium that infects the gastrointestinal tract. Symptoms typically appear within 12 to 72 hours and include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal cramps
- Fever
While most people recover within a week, high-risk individuals—children, seniors, pregnant women, and those with compromised immune systems—may experience severe or life-threatening complications.
Legal Implications and Consumer Rights
Restaurants are legally responsible for maintaining safe food handling and hygiene practices. Failing to do so can expose them to legal claims. Victims of foodborne illness may seek compensation for:
- Medical bills
- Lost wages
- Pain and suffering
- Long-term health complications
Victims should seek medical care immediately and document symptoms and expenses for legal purposes.
