Microbial Keratitis, “MK” or corneal infection is a very rare but serious complication affecting around 5 in 10,000 contact lens wearers each year. Microbial Keratitis is a bacterial infection of the front surface of the eye (the cornea), which can lead to vision loss or blindness.

Have you developed Microbial Keratitis after using a multi-purpose contact lens solution?

Why You Should Choose Schmidt & Clark, LLP: Our Experience - Contact Lens Solution Litigation

Our firm is investigating a possible link between corneal eye infections (keratitis) and other multi-purpose contact lens solutions including but not limited to ReNu with MoistureLoc & ReNu MultiPlus (Bausch & Lomb), Opti-Free (Alcon), SOLO-care (Ciba Vision), and Complete® MoisturePlus™ Multi-Purpose Solution (Advanced Medical Optics).

If you or a loved one have developed a corneal infection (keratitis) while using any multi-purpose contact lens solution, you should contact us immediately. You may be entitled to compensation.

Symptoms

Microbial Keratitis or corneal infections are associated with pain, which usually develops rapidly, and severe redness. Other symptoms of may include:

  • Tearing or discharge
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Puffiness of the lids
  • Decreased visual acuity

Because there are similarities with symptoms of other eye infections, early diagnosis is essential for effective treatment of Microbial Keratitis.

If you feel that you may have developed Microbial Keratitis you should seek professional medical attention immediately. If left untreated, these infections could lead to blindness, vision loss or other serious side effects.

Diagnosis

Early diagnosis is essential for effective treatment of Microbial Keratitis. The infection is usually diagnosed by an eye specialist based on symptoms and from a scraping of the eye.

Treatment

Several prescription eye medications are available for treatment. However, the infection can sometimes be difficult to treat and the best treatment regimen for each patient should be determined by an eye doctor. If you suspect your eye might be infected with Microbial Keratitis, see an ophthalmologist immediately.

Microbial Keratitis & AMO Complete® MoisturePlus™ Recall

The FDA and Advanced Medical Optics have initiated a nationwide recall of Complete® MoisturePlus™, the popular contact lens solution used by millions of Americans.

Certain lots of the Complete® MoisturePlus™ Multi-Purpose contact lens care solution and Active Packs were found to have bacterial contamination, which could lead to serious side effects including Microbial Keratitis, eye or corneal infections and vision loss.

The CDC and the FDA are now investigating 138 confirmed cases of "Acanthamoeba Keratitis", another rare, painful eye infection that can lead to permanent vision loss or blindness.

"The CDC estimates a risk of at least seven times greater for those who used Complete MoisturePlus solution versus those who did not."

Our law firm is currently accepting cases of Microbial Keratitis and Acanthamoeba Keratitis linked to the AMO Complete® MoisturePlus™ Recall.

If you feel that you may have developed Microbial Keratitis or Acanthamoeba Keratitis you should seek professional medical attention immediately. If left untreated, these infections could lead to blindness, vision loss or other serious side effects.

Talk to your doctor:
Microbial Keratitis is often misdiagnosed, and/or confused with other forms of keratitis caused by bacteria, fungus or viruses such as herpes. If you have developed a corneal infection that has not responded well to treatment, you may want to ask your doctor to consider acanthamoeba.
