Update: J&J to Settle Morcellator Cancer Lawsuits
March 22, 2016 – Johnson & Johnson is settling a number of product liability lawsuits alleging that its power morcellators harmed women by spreading undetected cancer cells during routine laparoscopic procedures, according to The Wall Street Journal. About 100 complaints have been filed or prepared against J&J’s Ethicon unit over injuries allegedly caused by the company’s morcellators. Of these, nearly 70 suits have been settled over the past few months.
Laparoscopic Power Morcellators May Spread Cancer: FDA Warning
In April 2014, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning which stated that doctors should not use power morcellators during hysterectomy or myomectomy surgery because the devices may spread cancerous uterine tissue to other areas in the body.
Based on current information, FDA has determined that approximately 1 in 350 women who have a hysterectomy or myomectomy surgery for uterine fibroids have an undiagnosed type of cancer known as uterine sarcoma. If morcellation is used on these women, there is an increased risk that the morcellator will spread malignant tissue to the abdomen or pelvis.

Laparoscopic Hysterectomy Cancer Lawyers
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has estimated that uterine fibroid removal is a $2.1 billion annual industry, and that most women will be diagnosed with uterine fibroids at some time in their life. By promoting the use of laparoscopic power morcellators without adequately researching the risks or warning the public, it appears that manufacturers placed their desire for profits ahead of women’s safety.
