Illinois Family Alleges Zofran Caused Son’s Heart Defect
According to the lawsuit, which was filed July 21, 2015, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois under case number 3:15-cv-00787, the mother took Zofran to treat the symptoms of morning sickness during her first trimester of pregnancy. Although the drug is not and has never been approved for this purpose, GSK marketed it to doctors as an effective “off-label” indication for morning sickness, according to the complaint.
The couple’s son was born in 2006 and subsequently diagnosed with tetralogy of fallot, a congenital malformation that involves 4 separate heart defects. As a result, the child has been forced to undergo open heart surgery and will likely require numerous medical procedures in the future to prevent additional injury.
The mother claims that had she been aware of the risks involved with using Zofran during pregnancy, she would’ve never taken the drug. It was only recently that she learned that Zofran had been linked to an increased risk of birth defects. The couple is seeking in excess of $75,000 in damages from GSK.
What is Tetralogy of Fallot?
Tetralogy of Fallot, or TOF, is a cardiac anomaly that occurs when the following heart defects are found together:
- Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) – Hole in the wall separating the 2 lower chambers of the heart.
- Overriding Aorta − The aortic valve is enlarged and arises from both the left and right ventricles instead of just the left ventricle.
- Pulmonary Stenosis – Narrowing of the pulmonary valve that creates an obstruction of blood flow from the right ventricle to the pulmonary artery.
- Right Ventricular Hypertrophy − Thickening of the muscular walls of the right ventricle.
Illinois Mom Alleges Zofran Heart Defect Diminished Son’s Quality of Life
Another lawsuit recently filed by a mother in the Southern District of Illinois alleges that her son was born with a ventricular septal defect after she took Zofran for morning sickness during her first and second trimesters of pregnancy. As a result, the child “experienced severe development delay, cannot run or play hard with other children, and has exhibited emotional challenges due to his injury that was caused by his mother’s ingestion of Zofran.” Click here to learn more.
