Mother Claims Daughter’s Heart Defects Caused by Zofran

Zofran is at the center of another lawsuit alleging that the drug was responsible for causing birth defects in a baby after the mother took Zofran for morning sickness that occurred during pregnancy.

The anti-nausea medication Zofran is the subject of yet another lawsuit alleging that it caused heart defects in an unborn baby after the mother took the drug for morning sickness during pregnancy.

What’s the Problem?

Beth Botelho’s world was shattered after her baby daughter Marissa was diagnosed with a severe congenital heart defect shortly after being born.

“It was apparent something was really wrong,” Botelho said. “She needed open heart surgery. She was on life support. She was on a feeding tube. Initially, it was very overwhelming.”

Botelho blames her daughter’s defect on prenatal exposure to Zofran, a drug she took during her first trimester (the time when a fetus’ heart is developing in the womb). Although Zofran has never been approved for the treatment of morning sickness, it is frequently prescribed ‘off-label’ for this purpose.

In 2012, drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) agreed to pay $3 billion in a settlement with the U.S. Justice Department for what the agency called the “unlawful promotion” and “failure to report safety data” of several prescription medications, including Zofran.

Botelho claims her daughter is small for her age and has problems at school, and that her long-term medical outlook is uncertain.

“My hope is that if we can make her life a little bit easier, given that life is going to be a little bit of a struggle for her, I hope we can do that,” she said.
