An Arkansas woman has filed a lawsuit against GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) alleging that her use of the anti-nausea medication Zofran during pregnancy caused her son to be born with multiple birth defects including clubfoot, cleft palate and respiratory distress syndrome (RDS).

What’s the problem?
According to the lawsuit, plaintiff was prescribed Zofran for morning sickness during her first trimester of pregnancy. Her son was born in 2007, and was forced to undergo multiple corrective surgeries in order to repair the defects.
The complaint goes on to state that the mother only used Zofran for one of her 3 pregnancies. Coincidentally, this was the only pregnancy in which her delivered a child with birth defects. It is common for pregnant women to experience nausea associated with morning sickness during their firs trimester. This is also a critical time for fetal development in the womb.
Sadly, the Arkansas mother is not alone in her allegations of birth defects from Zofran exposure. Across the country, families have filed lawsuits against GSK citing similar allegations. Most of the complaints involve defects including clubfoot, cleft lip and palate, transposition of the greater vessels, tetralogy of fallot, atrial septal defect (ASD) and ventricular septal defect (VSD), respiratory defects and kidney defects.
