New York Wholesale Group initiated this recall after a routine analysis by the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection determined that the above products contained elevated levels of lead and inorganic arsenic.
Brief exposure to low levels of lead may not immediately cause noticeable symptoms. In some cases, the only detectable indication of lead exposure is an elevated blood lead level. More severe signs and symptoms typically emerge when exposure involves higher concentrations of lead over a short period. Lead has the potential to impact nearly every biological system, but the severity of its effects depends on factors such as dosage, duration, age, and body weight.
In developing fetuses, prolonged exposure to significant amounts of lead—ranging from several weeks to months—may lead to irreversible damage to the central nervous system. This can result in cognitive impairments, developmental delays, and other long-term health consequences. For adults, chronic lead exposure has been linked to kidney dysfunction, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease-related mortality, and cognitive decline over time.
Similarly, the ingestion of inorganic arsenic has been associated with various health risks, including cancer, skin disorders, cardiovascular complications, and diabetes. Exposure to inorganic arsenic during pregnancy, infancy, or early childhood may contribute to neurological developmental issues and increase the risk of cancer later in life.
The recalled herbal products, which are packaged in clear 100g (3.5oz) jars with gold lids, were distributed from 12/20/2024 to 01/07/2025 to retailers in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and California.
If you purchased any Zaarah herbal products that are affected by this recall, you should not use them, and either discard them immediately or return them to the point of purchase for a refund.
Anyone concerned about potential lead and/or arsenic poisoning, you should contact your healthcare provider or dial 9-1-1 immediately.
This recall began on March 10, 2025.
