New Report Links Nearly 200 Deaths to Yaz, Yasmin

An eye-opening new report has brought attention to the dangers faced by users of Yaz & Yasmin birth control products. The Coalition against Bayer Dangers (CBG) reports that at least 190 deaths have been attributed to the drugs in the United States alone. Bayer currently faces approximately 7,000 lawsuits alleging birth control side effects nationwide.

Yaz / Yasmin Lawsuit Update 8/2/12: According to a second quarter stockholders newsletter released this week, pharmaceutical giant Bayer is poised to pay out more than $1.2 billion to settle lawsuits filed on behalf of individuals allegedly injured by Yaz and Yasmin side effects.Yet despite the massive payout, Bayer will still face thousands of lawsuits over Yaz and Yasmin in the near future.

Yasmin Blood Clot Lawsuit Update 7/23/12: Last week, a Florida man filed a medical malpractice lawsuit which claimed that his wife died following plastic surgery as the result of a Yasmin-induced pulmonary embolism that could have been prevented if her doctors had taken her off the drug prior to surgery. The complaint notes that proper standards of medical care outlined in the Physician’s Desk Reference indicate that “oral contraceptives should be discontinued at least four weeks prior to and for two weeks after elective surgery.”

BIRTH CONTROL BLOOD CLOT UPDATE: 4/25/11
Two new British Medical Journal (BMJ) studies have confirmed that Yaz, Yasmin, Ocella and other new ‘fourth generation’ birth control medications significantly increase the risk of blood clots over those taking older birth control products. The results of the studies highlight the well known fact that the mix of hormones needed to prevent pregnancy also promote clotting factors.

What’s the problem?

April 20, 2011 – According to a new report by the Germany-based Coalition against Bayer Dangers (CBG), at least 190 Yaz and Yasmin users in the United States have died as a result of the drugs’ side effects. According to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) adverse events database, 140 deaths have been connected to Yasmin and another 50 have been attributed to Yaz, a newer form of the drug. And due to the fact that drug side effects often go severely underreported, the actual number of deaths caused by Yaz and Yasmin may be far higher.

Making matters worse, the vast majority of the victims were young women with few if any health problems. Many of the patients mysteriously developed catastrophic side effects including strokes, blood clots, pulmonary embolisms and gallbladder disease shortly after being prescribed the medications. Independent studies have found that drospirenone-containing birth control products (the active ingredient found in both Yaz and Yasmin) could increase the risk of a thrombosis event by as much as 80% over similar medications which are just as effective at preventing unwanted pregnancies. In light of these findings, CBG will be calling for Bayer to issue a Yaz and Yasmin recall.

To date, Bayer faces some 7,000 lawsuits related to the drugs that have been consolidated as part of a multidistrict litigation (MDL) in the U.S. District court for the Southern District of Illinois. There are also hundreds of other Yaz and Yasmin side effects lawsuits filed at the state level on behalf of women who say that Bayer failed to adequately research the drugs and warn the public about potential side effects.
