Two new studies have confirmed that Yaz, Yasmin and other new ‘fourth generation’ birth control medications significantly increase the risk of blood clots over those taking older birth control products. The results of the studies highlight the well known fact that the mix of hormones needed to prevent pregnancy also promote clotting factors.
Yaz / Yasmin Lawsuit Update 8/2/12: According to a second quarter stockholders newsletter released this week, pharmaceutical giant Bayer is poised to pay out more than $1.2 billion to settle lawsuits filed on behalf of individuals allegedly injured by Yaz and Yasmin side effects.Yet despite the massive payout, Bayer will still face thousands of lawsuits over Yaz and Yasmin in the near future.
Yasmin Blood Clot Lawsuit Update 7/23/12: Last week, a Florida man filed a medical malpractice lawsuit which claimed that his wife died following plastic surgery as the result of a Yasmin-induced pulmonary embolism that could have been prevented if her doctors had taken her off the drug prior to surgery. The complaint notes that proper standards of medical care outlined in the Physician’s Desk Reference indicate that “oral contraceptives should be discontinued at least four weeks prior to and for two weeks after elective surgery.”
Yaz / Yasmin Lawsuit Update 7/9/12: After nearly six months of settlement negotiations, Bayer has reportedly reached agreements with approximately 33 different law firms to resolve at least 1,444 Yaz and Yasmin lawsuits. All of the claims were filed on behalf of women who suffered blood clot-related injures after taking the company’s blockbuster birth control pills.
Yaz Lawsuit Update 6/18/12: Last month, a former Yaz user filed a lawsuit against pharmaceutical giant Bayer after she allegedly suffered blood clots leading to a life-threatening pulmonary embolism (PE) event. The plaintiff claims she began using Yaz in November 2006 and subsequently developed blood clots from the drug leading to the PE in December 2009.
Yaz / Yasmin Lawsuit Update 5/2/12: For the third time this year, deadlines for lawsuits over side effects caused by Bayer’s controversial birth control pills Yaz and Yasmin have been extended another 90 days. What’s the problem?
April 25, 2011 – Two new studies published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) have found that women taking so-called ‘fourth generation’ oral birth control medications such as Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella had a two to three times increased risk of developing blood clots over women who took older contraceptives.
The fundamental difference between the contraceptives is that the newer, fourth-generation varieties contain a synthetic version of the hormone progesterone called drospirenone, which seems to be responsible for the increased risk of blood clots. Older birth control products contain a different form of the hormone known as levonorgestrel, which has not been associated with this particular set of adverse events.
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) currently requires the packaging of Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella to include information about the increased risk of blood clots. Taking birth control is not recommended for women who have a history of blood clots, or are over 35 and smoke. Additionally, birth control medications can also cause a number of other side effects including spotting, cramps and mood swings.
