Yaz / Yasmin Lawsuit Update 8/2/12: According to a second quarter stockholders newsletter released this week, pharmaceutical giant Bayer is poised to pay out more than $1.2 billion to settle lawsuits filed on behalf of individuals allegedly injured by Yaz and Yasmin side effects.Yet despite the massive payout, Bayer will still face thousands of lawsuits over Yaz and Yasmin in the near future.
Yaz Lawsuit Update 7/9/12: After nearly six months of settlement negotiations, Bayer has reportedly reached agreements with approximately 33 different law firms to resolve at least 1,444 Yaz and Yasmin lawsuits. BIRTH CONTROL BLOOD CLOT UPDATE: 4/25/11
Two new British Medical Journal (BMJ) studies have confirmed that Yaz, Yasmin, Ocella and other new ‘fourth generation’ birth control medications significantly increase the risk of blood clots over those taking older birth control products. The results of the studies highlight the well known fact that the mix of hormones needed to prevent pregnancy also promote clotting factors.

What’s the problem?
A pulmonary embolism (PE) is a condition in which blood is unable to travel through the lung due to a blockage in an artery that belongs to the lung. Lung function is compromised and a number of symptoms are experienced. These symptoms include (but are not limited to):
- Bloody coughing
- Chest pain that radiates into the shoulder, arm, neck, or jaw
- A rapid heartbeat
- Shortness of breath that occurs suddenly and without warning
If you’re having a PE, you may also experience bluish-colored or clammy skin, fever, excessive sweating, anxiety, lightheadedness, fainting, leg swelling, wheezing, or a weak pulse. A third of those who have experienced a PE that has not been treated will not survive it. Those who do survive may have to suffer heart damage and pulmonary hypertension.
Although not all women taking Yaz will develop a pulmonary embolism, several factors put certain women at higher risk. The risk seems to be associated with a high risk for blood clots. Those women who are at a higher risk of developing PE while taking Yaz are those who smoke, those over 35, and those who have a family history of pulmonary embolism.
