Yet another lawsuit has been filed against Bayer on behalf of a New York woman who allegedly developed a blood clot and other serious side effects after taking the company’s blockbuster birth control pill Yaz. Since first being approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 2006, Yaz has been repeatedly linked to blood clots, strokes, coronary events, and even death. Among other things, the new Yaz lawsuit claims that Bayer ignored the potential health risks associated with its best-selling drug, placing profits ahead of public safety.
Yaz Lawsuit Update 7/31/12: The number of lawsuits filed against pharmaceutical giant Bayer on behalf of women allegedly injured by Yaz and Yasmin continues to grow by leaps and bounds around the country, as the federal multidistrict litigation (MDL) for the cases recently surpassed asbestos as the largest in the nation. All of the complaints involve similar allegations which state that Bayer knew – or should have known – about the health risks involved with its blockbuster birth control pills, but that it failed to inform the public and medical communities about this risk.
Yaz Lawsuit Update 7/9/12: After nearly six months of settlement negotiations, Bayer has reportedly reached agreements with approximately 33 different law firms to resolve at least 1,444 Yaz and Yasmin lawsuits. All of the claims were filed on behalf of women who suffered blood clot-related injures after taking the company’s blockbuster birth control pills.
Yaz Lawsuit Update 6/18/12: Last month, a former Yaz user filed a lawsuit against pharmaceutical giant Bayer after she allegedly suffered blood clots leading to a life-threatening pulmonary embolism (PE) event. The plaintiff claims she began using Yaz in November 2006 and subsequently developed blood clots from the drug leading to the PE in December 2009.

What’s the problem?
May 29, 2012 – The new Yaz lawsuit, which was filed earlier this month on behalf of Angela Wright in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York, claims that the plaintiff developed the following complications after taking Yaz for about a year and a half:
- blood clot
- vaginal spotting and bleeding
- abdominal pain
- pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lungs)
- dysuria (painful urination)
- deep vein thrombosis (clot that originates in a deep vein)
The complaint notes that the FDA warned Bayer on at least three separate occasions about misleading marketing tactics that minimized Yaz and Yasmin side effects. Additionally, the lawsuit claims that Bayer is guilty of:
- ignoring the risk of blood clots and other serious side effects, despite mounting research and scientific evidence;
- failure to warn the public of these risks;
- manufacturing and design defects;
- unfair and deceptive trade practices;
- fraud and deceit.
Last December, an independent advisory panel to the FDA determined that the Yaz warning label was insufficient and needed updating. The panel analyzed a prior study into adverse event reports filed with the administration, and found that approximately 10 in 10,000 women who took Yaz subsequently developed a blood clot. For women taking other forms of birth control, the risk was just six in 10,000. Additional research conducted by the FDA concluded that Yaz was associated with a 75% increased risk of blood clots.
