Birth control products that contain synthetic hormones have recently been linked to a severe neurological side effect called pseudotumor cerebri. This condition occurs when pressure builds up inside the skull, causing symptoms which may include headaches, migraines, vision loss, and permanent blindness.

Yasmin and Pseudotumor Cerebri

It has recently been found that hormone-containing birth control pills may increase certain users risk of developing pseudotumor cerebri. However, it is still uncertain what exactly causes the condition. Levonorgestrel, a synthetic hormone contained in some oral contraceptives, was linked to pseudotumor cerebri in 1995.

What is Pseudotumor Cerebri?

Pseudotumor cerebri is a condition in which the pressure around the brain (intracranial pressure) increases, causing headaches and vision problems. The name literally means “false brain tumor,” because its symptoms so closely resemble those caused by brain tumors. Pseudotumor cerebri may also be referred to as idiopathic intracranial hypertension or benign intracranial hypertension.

Symptoms

  • Blurred vision
  • Double vision (diplopia)
  • Eye injury (papilledema)
  • Buzzing sound in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Vision loss
  • Headache

FDA Warnings on Yasmin

Since 2004, more than 50 deaths have been reported in women who took Yasmin. As a result of these problems, the FDA has issued several warnings to Bayer regarding the inappropriateness of their marketing of Yasmin:
