Yasmin and Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension

Studies have determined that certain hormone-based contraceptives may increase users’ risk of developing idiopathic intracranial hypertension. However, it is still uncertain as to what exactly causes the disorder. Levonorgestrel, a second generation hormone found in some birth control products, was linked to IIH in 1995.

What is IIH?

Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension occurs when pressure around the brain suddenly increases, causing chronic headaches and vision problems. These symptoms closely resemble those produced by brain tumors, which can lead to misdiagnosis. IIH has also been referred to in the medical literature as benign intracranial hypertension (BIH).
