What’s the problem?

September 27, 2016 – According to the lawsuit, Plaintiff’s father was prescribed Xarelto to treat his atrial fibrillation (a-fib), an irregular heartbeat that can increase a person’s risk of developing a blood clot or stroke. He had only been taking the drug a short time when he fell and sustained a brain bleed, and was subsequently diagnosed with an intracerebral hemorrhage. He eventually died from the bleeding, according to the lawsuit.

Traditional blood-thinners such as warfarin can be counteracted with the use of Vitamin K, which reverses the drug’s effects and allows blood to clot. At the time of the plaintiff’s father’s death, however, there was no antidote for Xarelto bleeding events, leaving doctors with no option other than a blood transfusion or surgery.

Plaintiff is alleging that Bayer AG and Janssen Pharmaceuticals were negligent for releasing a medication without a reversal agent, which can create irreversible bleeding events, as was the case with her father.

In addition to the Vermont lawsuit, at least 550 similar complaints have been centralized in a mass tort in Philadelphia, PA, along with 2,800 others that have been consolidated into a Multidistrict Litigation (MDL 2592) in the Eastern District of Louisiana.
