ISMP: Xarelto Adverse Events Surpass Pradaxa Complications

May 15, 2014 – In the recent online edition of the Institute of Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) QuarterWatch Report, the number of complaints received involving Xarelto now outnumber Pradaxa, which just a year ago generated more reports of severe (in some cases fatal) health consequences than any other product monitored by the group. According to the report, there were 680 serious injuries associated with Xarelto, compared to only 528 for Pradaxa over the previous year. The complications linked to Xarelto are increasing significantly, while reported Pradaxa side effects are declining. ISMP attributes the shift mainly to increasing sales of Xarelto and declining use of Pradaxa.

Xarelto & Pradaxa Lawsuits

Boehringer Ingelheim, the company that makes Pradaxa, is now facing over 2,000 lawsuits filed on behalf of people alleging that the company failed to warn about the drug’s lack of reversal agent. In August of 2012, a multidistrict litigation (MDL) was formed for all Pradaxa Lawsuits filed on the federal level. The litigation is being handled by Judge David R. Herndon in the Southern District of Illinois. MDLs are used to reduce duplicative discovery, avoid conflicting rulings from different judges, and to serve the convenience of all parties involved in the litigation. Boehringer also faces Pradaxa lawsuits in state courts in Illinois, California and Connecticut. In February 2014, what is believed to be the first Xarelto Lawsuit was filed in the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas, raising similar allegations.
