What are the Symptoms of Internal Bleeding?
Internal bleeding refers to blood loss occurring within a patient’s body. Because this happens inside the body (rather than on the outside), internal bleeds may go unnoticed for a period of time. If the bleeding is rapid, enough blood may accumulate to press on internal structures, or to form a bulge or discolored spot underneath the skin. Severe internal bleeding events can cause shock, loss of consciousness, and even death.
Symptoms of Xarelto bleeding may include:
- Unexpected bleeding or unusually long lasting bleeding
- Severe or uncontrollable bleeding
- Pink or brown urine
- Red or black stools
- Bruises with unknown cause
- Blood clots and coughing up blood
- Blood in vomit or vomit with “coffee grounds” consistency
- Unexpected pain, swelling, joint pain, headaches, dizziness, weakness
What’s the Problem with Xarelto?
In 2011, Xarelto was approved for the treatment of stroke, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and blood clots in patients who have recently undergone hip or knee replacement surgery. Like other anticoagulants, Xarelto carries the risk of internal bleeding as one of its side effects. However, Xarelto internal bleeding events cannot be controlled or reversed, making it far more dangerous than traditional blood-thinners like warfarin (a staple anticoagulant that’s been in use for more than 50 years in the U.S.).
Xarelto Lawsuit Allegations
Xarelto lawsuits have been filed against the drug’s manufacturers which claim, among other things:
- Failure to warn of uncontrollable internal bleeding
- Failure to warn that internal bleeding events with Xarelto could not be controlled or reversed, as with other blood-thinners like warfarin
- That Xarelto was defectively designed
- Failure to update the drug’s warning labels in a timely manner
Some former Xarelto users are also alleging that Johnson & Johnson and Bayer AG should have recalled the drug when they became aware of these risks.
