Walmart Sued Over Salmonella Outbreak
In September 2006, a lawsuit was filed against Walmart on behalf of a customer who was allegedly sickened with salmonella poisoning after consuming ham and cheese purchased at its location in Greenwood, Indiana.
The store’s deli and bakery departments were the source of at least 140 cases of salmonella in 2 Indiana counties from May to August 2006, according to the Indiana State Department of Health.
The lawsuit was filed in Johnson County Superior Court in Indiana, on behalf of Ryan Merritt, whose son allegedly became seriously ill and was hospitalized after consuming food purchased from the store’s deli department on August 13, 2006.
Merritt’s son Noah ate the ham and cheese days after its purchase and became sick on August 18. The suit alleges his symptoms became severe on August 20 and he was brought to the emergency room on August 22, admitted, and released from the hospital 2 days later.
