Frozen Waffles Recalled Nationwide Over Listeria Risk

Oak Brook, Illinois-based TreeHouse Foods Inc., is recalling nearly 700 products that were distributed throughout the U.S. and Canada with best by dates ranging from October 2024 to March 2026, according to an FDA Recall Letter [1.]. The problem was discovered during routine testing at the TreeHouse Foods manufacturing facility.

“Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” FDA said. “Healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Listeria monocytogenes infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”

What is a Listeria Infection?

A Listeria infection, or listeriosis, is an illness caused by consuming food contaminated with the Listeria monocytogenes bacteria [3.]. Though relatively rare, this infection can be life-threatening for certain individuals, including older adults, those with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women.

Who is Most at Risk?

While anyone can contract listeriosis, it poses a greater risk to:

  • The elderly
  • Individuals with compromised immune systems
  • Pregnant women and their unborn babies

Symptoms of Listeria Infection

Symptoms can range from mild to severe. Early signs often include:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle aches and pains

Without treatment, the infection may progress to more serious conditions, such as:

  • Meningitis (inflammation of the brain and spinal cord)
  • Septicemia (a serious bloodstream infection)

Listeria in Pregnant Women

Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to listeriosis, and even a mild case can result in serious consequences, such as:

  • Miscarriage
  • Stillbirth
  • Premature birth
  • Severe illness in newborns

By staying informed about food safety and promptly seeking medical care if symptoms arise, individuals can minimize the risks associated with Listeria infection.
