Nearly 107,000 Volvos Recalled for Defective Brakes

Volvo is recalling around 106,900 cars worldwide over a suspected fault related to the brakes, a Volvo Cars spokesperson announced on January 24, 2023. Vehicles affected by the recall include the model year 2023 C40, XC40, S60, V60, XC60, V90 and XC90.

A diagnostic error in the Brake Control Module 2 (BCM2) in the above vehicles may cause a loss of Antilock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and traction control. A reduction in brake support functions can increase the risk of a crash and severe personal injuries, including death.

Volvo will release an over-the-air (OTA) BCM2 software update, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on March 15, 2023.

Volvo’s number for this recall is R10217.

What’s the Problem?

Volvo Cars USA, LLC, is recalling many of its best-selling vehicles for a potential defect in the brake system which could cause a total loss of braking power, increasing the risk of a crash and severe injuries to the driver and passengers.

According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), this recall affects the following vehicles:

  • 2019-2020 Volvo S60
  • 2019-2020 Volvo V60
  • 2019-2020 Volvo V60 Cross Country
  • 2019-2020 Volvo S90
  • 2019-2020 Volvo V90
  • 2019-2020 Volvo V90 Cross Country
  • 2019-2020 Volvo XC40
  • 2019-2020 Volvo XC60
  • 2019-2020 Volvo XC90

Due to a software/hardware incompatibility on the recalled Volvos, the Automatic Emergency Brake (AEB) system may not detect obstacles and engage as intended, NHTSA said. If the automatic emergency braking system does not engage as intended, it can increase the risk of a crash.

Volvo is notifying owners and dealers will update the Active Safety Domain Master (ASDM) software, free of charge. This recall began on May 1, 2020.

Volvo King Pin Recall

Volvo is recalling 2021 Volvo VNL, VHD, and VNR vehicles which were sold with a kingpin nut that was improperly installed and/or tightened during axle assembly. “If the kingpin is missing or not tightened properly, the knuckle may separate from the axle, increasing the risk of a crash,” NHTSA said. This recall began on September 28, 2020.

Volvo Trucks Steering Recall

Volvo Trucks North America is recalling 2020-2021 Volvo VNL and VNR trucks over concerns their steering gear fasteners may not have been properly tightened, according to the NHTSA. Loose fasteners may result in a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash. This recall began on May 29, 2020.
