Update: Volkswagen Atlas Recalled for Tire Blowout Hazard

Volkswagen is recalling 2020-2021 Atlas Cross Sport and 2021 Atlas vehicles equipped with Continental Cross Contact LX Sport tires, size 255/50 R 20 105 T. The tires may have been over-cured, which could result in a sidewall break causing a sudden loss of air pressure or the tread separating from the tire. “Both conditions increase the risk of a crash,” NHTSA said. This recall began on November 30, 2020.

What’s the Problem?

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc., is recalling select vehicles for allegedly defective Takata airbags which can explode without warning, causing serious injury or even death to the driver and passengers inside.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), this recall affects:

The driver’s side airbag inflator in these cars may explode from propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high humidity, high temperatures, and high-temperature cycling. An airbag explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the vehicle’s occupants, resulting in severe injury or even death.

Volkswagen is notifying owners of affected vehicles, and dealers will replace the driver’s side airbag inflators, free of charge. The recall began on Dec. 20, 2019.
