Update: More Volkswagen Beetles Recalled to Replace Faulty Takata Airbags
In December 2022, Volkswagen announced that it was recalling another 37,558 Volkswagen Beetle coupes and convertibles from model years 2015-2016 to replace their potentially defective Takata driver-side airbags, according to Consumer Reports [1.].
As a result of the defect, these airbags could rupture in a crash and eject metal debris that could seriously injure or kill vehicle occupants.
According to the NHTSA, tests indicated that the inflators of certain driver-side airbags installed in the recalled Volkswagen Beetles—known as Takata SDI-D frontal inflators—may become more dangerous over time.
For this reason, Volkswagen is replacing the airbags with newer versions before they become a more serious safety concern. To date, there have been no crashes or injuries related to these specific airbags.
What’s the Problem?
According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), this recall affects:
- 2012-2014 Volkswagen Beetle
- 2012-2014 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible
These Beetles were manufactured with driver’s side airbag inflators that may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high-temperature cycling. An airbag inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants.
